Water plays many crucial roles in our health and wellbeing. There is a good reason why ~60% of our body consists of water, and water also covers over 70% of the earth's surface. While hydrating properly has been associated with numerous health benefits, many people don't consume enough fluids. Here are the top five facts about water that everyone should know.

  1. It lubricates your jointsThe cartilages that are located in your joints and spinal discs contain about 80% of water. If you don't drink enough water, dehydration will drastically reduce the shock-absorbing abilities of your joints, which is bad news for your health. You may experience joint pain even after doing very little physical activity. To keep their body and joints functioning at their best, professional athletes need to stay well-hydrated. Some athletes also use BCAAs like this one, and other supplements to help with recovery. That said, water, as a universal solvent, is needed to break down the ingredients in the supplements.
  2. Water regulates your temperatureWhen your body heats up, the water in the middle layer of your skin comes out as sweat. When sweat evaporates from the surface of your skin, it cools down your body. Scientists suggest that heat storage increases when there is less water in your body, thereby making it harder for you to tolerate heat strain. It's also believed that hydrating your body helps you minimize your risks of physical strain when you experience heat stress while exercising.

I encourage my clients to drink half of their body weight in ounces of water per day, minimum. If plain water isn’t your thing you can try adding citrus fruits or berries to add natural and healthy flavors!
