How to Create a Healthy Morning Routine (and Why You Should)

Starting the day off positively and on a good note is a big part of a balanced wellness routine. The way you start your day deeply impacts how the rest of your day will go. Your thoughts create your life - truly. Visualize how you want your day to go. Build up your mental resilience by creating a positive affirmation for yourself.  Make an intentional effort to be happier. The prerogative to stay healthy, happy, vibrant, and thriving is a commitment to yourself and expands onto others.Start by setting your intention for the day. Starting your morning with an affirmation, thought or action will more than likely set you off in the right mood. Happiness is a path that comes from within and practicing something, even if it's something small like saying a quote or something you are grateful for every morning, will improve your mood. It will put happiness into your daily practice and before you know it, it will feel like a natural thing to do. Then, find yourself fuel. Whether that be a yummy breakfast bowl, carrot juice, or coffee, your body and mind need fuel to reenergize and find motivation. Starting the day off with a full tummy will help you feel ready for the day of work, routine, and exercise.

Implement a daily routine that will nourish all aspects of your life. Begin by picking a ritual that you can stick to first thing every morning. Morning mantras and routine will soon become natural to you and you’ll quickly find out how important they are for setting your day on the right path. Try implementing any or all of these feel-good formulas for yourself:

  1. Sunlight before screen light. The thing about the generation of smartphones is that many see it as their first priority. If you find yourself opening your eyes, rolling over, and grabbing your smartphone then stop. Adding silence before catching up with news, social media, and anything over yourself is key. Your phone can wait an extra 10 minutes. Appreciate the moment you wake up and use that time to wake up, adjust your focus and think your own thoughts. I always encourage my meditation students to meditate before doing anything else. Your mind is still quiet and hasn’t been flooded by your thoughts or exposure to people, news, etc. yet.
  1. Meditation. Meditation can be done at any time of the day but morning meditation will help set the perspective mood for the day. It will help you focus, reenergize and feel content and optimistic. Aim for 10 minutes each day. An open, interested, and inquiring mind comes from meditation and the practice is a great way to put your head straight if you get out of the bed on the wrong side.
  1. Get outside. Natural light stimulates circadian rhythm. Our circadian rhythm is a natural internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle daily. keeping it balanced can improve your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing not to mention trigger your dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain so we can literally just be happy. Sitting outside first thing in the morning helps our body refresh, takes in some natural air, and motivates us. There’s something infinitely healing and calming about the outside world. Starting your day with a calming moment can set the tone for the day. 

Not only does a morning practice teach you to go about your day in a positive way, but it is also the very beginning of your daily routine. The secret of success is found in your daily routine.
